The Crusades

Much has been written and much has been omitted when it comes to the Crusades; especially in modern parlance. Many talking heads in recent times have conjured up the specter of the Crusades as if it should be a source of great shame and disgust for Western Civilization. And with even President Obama drawing odd parallels in light of the beheadings of ISIS; many are wondering once again what all of this “Crusades talk” is all about.

Inside you will read about...

✓ Backing Up Byzantium
✓ All Out Holy War
✓ The Kingdom of Heaven
✓ The King’s Crusade
✓ The Self-Defeating Crusade
✓ The Final Crusades
✓ The Post-Crusade World

The Crusades took place over a thousand years ago, and yet we currently live in a modern day world of unspeakable terror. Islamic extremists are disrupting the entire planet, murdering, raping and enslaving everyone they encounter. Committing brutalities on a scale that rivals some of the worst abuses of the dark ages and yet people still point to the Crusades as if it is supposed to mean something. Ok, that’s fine. If detractors wish to point their finger and call out history, let’s find the truth, and let’s find out what really happened.

The Crusades A History From Beginning to End edition by Henry Freeman Religion Spirituality eBooks

In 30 pages or so the author has given a very good history of Crusades from 11th to 15th century. You don't get all the gory details of course, but probably all that's required to understand what happened. The author does go into why Crusades were necessary: Muslims were subjugating all the Middle East and into Asia. Europe was next and after some early successes by the Crusaders, they focused on the "holy land" (Jerusalem, etc.). One of surprising facts here is that Columbus went looking for a sea route to Asia because Muslims controlled the land route, and he wanted to finance his own Crusade.

See Ibn Warraq's excellent book "Why I Am Not A Muslim" or any of Ayaan Hirsi Ali's books to find out why Islam is still doing Inquisitions today, centuries after Christianity stopped. Jihad is baked into the Quran, impossible to ignore.

The Crusades A History From Beginning to End edition by Henry Freeman Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

Of all of Freeman's many short works of history, this is the only one I have paid for, so far. If ever there was a subject or event in history that didn't require a huge amount of pages, this is it. Interesting facts on Columbus I didn't know. The Leper King, Richard the Lionhearted was benevolent beyond belief. Excellent job Freeman. I highly recommend this book.
This is just a short survey of history that does not go into any detail and is clearly written without any objectivity. The author is clearly from the conservative end of the political spectrum.
It's a book that you can wrap up over a weekend and introduce you to the basic history of the Crusades. With this in your mind, you can branch out and find more indepth books that go deeper into the topic. If you wanted some 600-page massive introduction....no, this is not for you.
As an overview of the chronology of the crusades in the Holy Lands, this book has its merits. It is an easy read that presents the major battles and characters of the most significant of the crusades, and a brief overview of the less significant.
However, the overview is embedded in an attack on revisionist historians. The basically sets out to claim that revisionist ideas such as crusaders seeking a fight for less than noble goals are wrong, almost libellious, and that the crudsades were a desperate fight for survival against "mass-murdering" Muslims. But while the book does cover the crusades chronologically and with a focus on military battles, there is little to no mention of Christian massacres on Muslims, executions of prisoners, of the individual motivations for the thousands of troops whose names are lost to history, of economic impacts, and of political and strategic reasons for going on crusades rather than pure religious motivations.
There is lilewise no mention of the crusades in Eastern Europe, which are hard to fit into a narrative of a fight for survival against Muslim hordes, nor any mention of the civilians and children organising their own crusades.
If you can overlook the clear bias and the occational spelling error, it works well as an overview.
I was looking for a brief introduction to the Crusades, which I know little about, and was excited to find this short book. However, now I'm worried that I learned incorrect information, as there's not a single reference in the book. The book was strewn with typos and colloquial words like "crap". I'm going to look into other sources. Would not recommend until this has been updated.
Travel with the tired, wounded knights and simple men who had one quest in their hearts through out all Medieval Ages… to restore Holy Land to the rightful people. Every steps of each Crusade path filled with fear, terror, and bloodshed. Hard times to both sides…

Figure who is rights and who is wrong? Was it necessary? Those are the questions I have asked myself when I read the book. Though the author did an excellent job with mini history series…
Today the word crusade and crusader are almost viewed as expletives and not "politically correct" (PC) The PC version of the Crusades is for political reasons known only to himself in 1099 AD Pope Urban II called for an unjustified attack on the peace loving Moslems occupying the Christian Holy Lands of the Middle East. This call resulted in the unleashing of tens of thousands of drunken, illiterate and godless Europeans driven by blood lust and rape. This of course, couldn’t be farther from the truth, and to know the real reason why Urban the II called for a Crusade in 1099 AD, you don’t have to look much further than to what ISIS is doing today. Then, just like now, Islamic armies were killing, raping and enslaving innocent people all over the Mid-East in the name of Islam. Many people like to refer to ISIS as the “so-called” Islamic state and point out that nothing they do is in any way Islamic. But the fact remains the history of the spread of Islam was written with bloody swords. It is critical that people know and understand the history of the Crusades and how they apply to what is happening all over the world today. I encourage everyone to read this important book!!
