Lightoller remarkablly swam away from the sinking Titanic and avoided being sucked under. This is just one of the remarkable escapes described in this book.

I almost gave this four stars, solely for some Kindle formatting problems and typos which I suspect are from an editor having to work with a scan or hand-typing the original in, and for the editor leaving out the dedication ("For my wife, who made me do it.") But I couldn't. I was simply charmed from the first sentence (and though he's woefully short on details of their first meeting, I'm sure the future Mrs. Lightoller was, too!) While any serious student of shipwrecks, the Titanic and otherwise, would do well to view his recounting with a charitably skeptical eye, if you want to feel as if you're sitting down with a real old sailor from the last great sea-faring age, read this book. From a teenage boy who ran away to sea getting a free meal in old 'Frisco' to a wreck on a deserted island to gold-prospecting in the Klondike, C. H. Lightoller was already a seasoned adventurer long before he found himself in the midst of the most famous shipwreck in history. While the book doesn't flow as smoothly as a professional writer's might, it feels as if you're listening to a sea captain telling tales. A must for not only Titanic fans but anyone who enjoys a grand adventure tale. You'll be left, like I was, wondering who should play him and Sylvia in the movie they ought to make.

A caution to modern readers: check your politically-correct hypersensitivity at the door. This was written in the inter-war period by an Englishman born in 1870.

Titanic and Other Ships Charles Herbert LIGHTOLLER 9781446131770 Books Reviews

Written in a very matter-of-fact style, even about the sinking of Titanic, Lightoller covers a lot of ground from his days as a newbie on sailing ships through an apparently very successful career. Early stuff is fascinating, and the Titanic portion is important as a first-hand variance with all the material that has come down over 100 years.
His description of the late sailing ship days in the first third of the book is detailed and better than about any other i have read.
Worth the book.

The later portion on his days in the Gold rush and even on the Titanic are less interesting, but readable.
I haven't gotten very far into it, but I have enjoyed what I've read.
This book is such a good read, I feel lucky to have this available! This gives you a clear picture on what life was like for sailors as sailing ships transitioned to steam ships. It took a lot of skill and a lot of bravery.

This book covers the Titanic well, but also focuses on Lightoller's entire career. Before this book, I had the impression that a ship's officers of this era were aristocrats, but I was very wrong. You'll learn a lot about sailing from this book!
It was an interesting book and a quick read. He doesn't go into much detail about the Titanic, so if you're going to spend the money, be aware of that ahead of time. But the other parts of his life story are pretty interesting.

Overall, it reads/seems as if he sat down one afternoon and told a story to his grand kids.
Good yarns from a prominent mariner, but must be taken with a grain of salt. For example, his memory of his Titanic experience and comments regarding John Philips (Senior Marconi radio officer) is at odds with those of others on the scene. His allegation that Philips said he had failed to deliver the ice-ahead warning from the S.S. Mesaba (which would have altered the Titanic's course) seems a fanciful fabrication -- which earned a threat of lawsuit from the Marconi Co ca. 1934 and no further publication of the book. His memoir offers exciting tales of WW-1 U-Boat attacks and Royal Navy protection of merchant ship convoys.
One of the best reads I've had in a long time. I never read fiction, preferring history books mostly. Lightoller's life was truly extraordinary. He endured great hardships and overcame them all. Through his telling of his experiences with becoming a sailor, first in sail, then in steam, he never once displays any pride. His story is told with a strident straightforwardness that is very easy to read and attractive to taking in. If any of us think we've had alot of hardships in our lives, read this and be grateful for the ease with which you've lived. He never is overcome by these hardships but instead he rises to every occasion with simple manly strength. We need more men like this in the world. I would have liked to know him and that is the best thing I can say about this man and his book. Highly recommend this great read.
